RFID Keychains
RFID keychains are compact, wireless access devices that replace traditional keys. They use RFID tags: chips that store a unique identification code and transmit it via radio waves to an RFID reader. As soon as the reader recognizes the code, access is granted. You simply hold the keychain up to or near the reader—without physical contact—and the door opens in a fraction of a second.
NFC World offers RFID keychains with various chip types, so you can always choose a model that’s compatible with your existing system.
Which chip is right for your system?
The most commonly used chip for RFID keychains is the MIFARE Classic 1K. It operates at 13.56 MHz, offers 1 kilobyte of storage, and is widely used in access control, time tracking, and locker systems. If you have a simpler system that only requires a fixed, unique serial number, the EM4100 at 125 kHz is a cost-effective alternative, often used for basic access gates. If you have higher security requirements—for example, in government buildings or server rooms—a MIFARE DESFire chip is a more obvious choice: it offers the same functionality as the Classic 1K but with more advanced encryption.
Not sure which chip is compatible with your reader or system? Our advisors are happy to help you figure it out, so you won’t run into any surprises after placing your order.
Applications of RFID Keychains
RFID keychains are widely used. In offices and businesses, they control access to buildings, conference rooms, and parking garages. In gyms and fitness centers, they open lockers and serve as membership identification. Educational institutions use them to grant students and staff access to buildings and facilities, while healthcare facilities use them to secure restricted areas and track staff time. In hotels and the hospitality industry, they manage room access and staff management, and in company cafeterias, they are used for cashless payments with a prepaid balance.
In addition to access control, RFID keychains are also used for time tracking: employees scan their keychains upon arrival and departure, ensuring that their hours are recorded automatically and accurately.
Why choose RFID keychains?
With an RFID keychain, you’ll never lose your keys again, and you’ll never have to get a new set made: you can program a replacement in just a few minutes. The identification code is much harder to copy than a physical key, which makes the system even more secure. Administrators can instantly adjust or revoke access rights directly through the system itself, without having to replace a lock. Every use of the key fob is automatically logged, which is valuable for security and audits. And thanks to its compact, durable design, the key fob attaches easily to any set of keys and can withstand daily use.
Programming an RFID Keychain
You can easily program an RFID keychain using an RFID reader. Connect the reader to your computer via USB, read the chip’s unique ID, and link it to a user, room, or permission level in your access control system. For chips with more memory, such as the MIFARE Classic 1K, you can store additional data in addition to the ID.
Customize keychains with your own logo
Would you like to make the key fobs recognizable as part of your organization? At NFC World, you can have RFID key fobs printed with your own logo, name, or corporate branding. This way, employees and visitors will immediately recognize the key fob as part of your company, and your access system will look just as professional as the rest of your organization.
